ORIGINS

Traditionally, saddle blankets were designed to provide a protective layer between the rider and the saddle, ensuring comfort and preventing friction on long journeys. These blankets were essential in both military and civilian contexts, particularly for those who spent much of their time on horseback, such as cowboys, soldiers, and nomadic tribes.

In the American West, saddle blankets became a staple for cowboys and ranchers, often made from wool or cotton and were designed to withstand the rugged outdoors. They were typically crafted with simple, durable materials that could endure exposure to the elements while also offering warmth and comfort to the rider. The patterns and designs of these blankets were often influenced by the local environment, with vibrant colours and geometric patterns becoming common in the textiles produced by Native American artisans, particularly those from the Southwestern United States.
