CLOTHING FOR PIONEERS

'Another instant favourite from the &SONS team. As always unbeatable style and quality. This is now my first choice additional layer.'

INTRODUCING

The Curtis Donkey Jacket is a tribute to the original workwear essential, reimagined for today. Born from the industrial heartlands of 19th-century Britain, the donkey jacket became a badge of honour for the working class, worn by everyone from shipbuilders and navvies to rebellious subcultures. With its rugged durability and distinctive design, it was a jacket for the hard-working and the hard-living.

We’ve taken that heritage and crafted a jacket that stays true to its roots while elevating it for the modern day. Where the original featured PVC panels, we’ve elevated the details with premium sheep leather yoke accents and extended elbow patches. The Curtis is built to endure, designed for now, and destined to last.

ORIGINS

First introduced in 1888 by George Key for the workers building the Manchester Ship Canal, the donkey jacket was designed as protection against the harshest elements. Its name is thought to reference the "donkey engines" used on construction sites, but its reputation quickly spread beyond the docks and railways. Over time, it became a symbol of resilience and rebellion, embraced by navvies, trade unionists, and eventually the rockabillies, Teddy Boys, and skinheads of the 20th century.

Originally constructed from thick Melton wool with leather or PVC panels for added durability, the donkey jacket was as practical as it was iconic. It represented the grit of British labourers and the understated cool of those who rejected mainstream trends.
