THROUGH THE LENS: Our latest view through the eyes of our Founder Phil James

Through the lens offers an insight into the world around &sons - a chance to look at what inspires and motivates us and what influences our collections.

in the latest edition, we take a look at a piece of clothing we have admired from afar for years, a team of pioneering designers and engineers redefining classic 4x4’s and our favourite instagram account.

True legends never die

Be warned, once viewed, you will be hooked. New Legends 4x4 are the masters of bringing International Scouts back to life and dragging them into the 21st Century. Their vision is to restore these timeless vehicles but with all the technology of a modern SUV. Just like &SONS, they live and breathe heritage but realise that in today’s world, you need a balance of old and new.

“I drove my first Scout 20 years ago and instantly fell in love.
It was a low mileage, ’78 Scout II, Selective Edition, 345 4 speed
- it was perfect!" - Founder Scott

Scott built up a collection of Scouts and soon decided to bring old and new together with modern technology and the classic shape we all know and love.

"I finished a beautiful Scout II with a fuel-injected Chevy 400, NV4500, Atlas transfer case, and Dynatrac axles. That’s when I knew we were onto something.” - Founder Scott

The coolest lesson on history ever!

This is how history should've been taught at school!

@historycoolkids is a source of info on characters and occasions in history. They say that “history provides context to everything around us” and that knowledge is power. Looking back at cultures from around the world shows us how far we’ve come but also how far we have to go as a society. We have learnt of the first same-sex marriage in 1901 where Elisa Sanchez disguised herself as a man for the ceremony to take place through to a beard guide published in 1909 in the Daily Mirror.

Icons of imagery

In 1947, following the aftermath of the Second World War, four pioneering photographers founded a now-legendary alliance. Combining an extraordinary range of individual styles into one powerful collaboration, Henri
Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, George Rodger and David Seymour started, over a celebratory bottle of champagne, the most important artists’ cooperative ever created: The Magnum Photos agency.

For more than 70 years Magnum has been creating the highest quality photographic content for an international client base of media, charities, publishers, brands and cultural institutions. The Magnum library is also a living archive updated regularly with new work from across the globe.

“I have just bought an original contact sheet and print from a famous photoshoot. These are some of the most amazing images ever photographed, and you can license or buy pieces. As a photographer, this is one of my go-to places for inspiration." - Phil James

Bravo for breton

The Breton stripe shirt was first introduced in 1858 as the uniform for all French navy seaman in Northern France. The original design featured 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleon Bonaparte’s victories and the distinctive stripes made it easier to spot wayward sailors who had fallen overboard.

We’ve recently been researching the famous top, looking back through archives of renowned designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and timeless style icons. It’s a distinct pattern that is classic, and as a brand, it’s the perfect piece for our Summer collection. So all we’ll say is watch this space…
